Greater Monroe -- staking claim as a "Sportsman's Paradise" -- flavors hospitality with mysterious bayous branching out from rivers, adding to a sense of historic intrigue. In West Monroe's Cottonport Historic District, Antique Alley features collectibles and eateries. Fishing is abundant in hotspots like Ouachita River, Cheniere Lake, Lake D'Arbonne and Caney Lake. A game thief hotline operates within this area where serious hunting includes deer, duck, dove, squirrel, and turkey. The 1800-acre Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge has a pier, nature trail, wildlife observation deck, arboretum, and a visitor / education center. East of Monroe, the Russell-Sage Wildlife Management Area features horseback riding, hiking, birding, camping, trapping, and ATV trails to go along with the hunting and fishing. Biedenharn Bible Museum & Gardens features the family home built by Joe Biedenharn, the first bottler of Coca-Cola. Layton Castle, built around a cottage in 1910, is near an 18th century building housing a collection of bottles found on the site.

Other attractions include the Aviation and Military Museum of Louisiana, Northeast Louisiana Delta African American Museum, Museum of Natural History, and the Quachita River Art Gallery. Twin City Drag Way racing runs February to November, and the Ike Hamilton Expo Center hosts rodeo, barrel racing, and all types of livestock events. Sassagoula Falls Adventure Golf features 18 holes of miniature fun including waterfalls and a gristmill with a spinning water wheel. July through September rain or shine in Wheeling, the Louisiana Lawnmower Racing Speedway features the South's fastest lawnmowers on dirt-covered oval. Shopping options include Pecanland Mall and Pecanland Commons, Bridge Pointe Shopping Center, Desiard Plaza, Twin City Plaza and Twin City Shopping Center, Eastgate Shopping Center, Northgate Shopping Center, Southside Shopping Center, Westpoint Shopping Center, and Key West Shopping Center. Restaurants run the gamut from the Beignet Café to Big Momma's Fine Foods, Boudreaux's Creole Grill, Taco Bandido, and Yummy Japan. Greater Monroe accommodations range from family-owned B&Bs and motels to nationally recognized hotel brands.
